Simple Burger: Is Less Really More?
You may have seen the popular lunch spot across from Christie Pits called Simple Burger. We have, too! It’s another one of the many smash burger joints that have popped up around Toronto. After months of walking by in wonder, we finally decided to give it a try. And what better way to document our experience than through the school newspaper?!
We arrived in a very nice, small and clean environment and were nicely greeted by the cashier who offered us both the student special: fries or onion rings, soda, and a single burger, for around $15. As we sat down, students came trickling in, filling the restaurant. Our food was brought to our table in no more than five minutes. With generous amounts of fries and onion rings and a nice-looking burger, the plating was promising. First-bite feelings were satisfying. The patty was juicy, the bun was soft, and the texture was there. Although after processing the first taste, we realized something was missing: the flavours. Although the melted cheese and standard toppings made for a nice texture, no component was highlighted due to the absence of flavour contrast. The sauce lacked the tang and depth of umami that makes you think “I can’t wait for my next bite!”
The smash burger is known for its unique thinly pressed patties with crispy, caramelized, lacy edges. It is said on their Instagram: “Our smash burgers come only one way… thin & crispy!!!” They also say of the patties: “So wide it drapes over the sides." Sadly, our burgers bore no resemblance to their Instagram masterpieces. Lacy edges? Nope! Patties draping over the sides? Not today, they weren’t. Thinly smashed? We don’t think so. Whether this was just a bad day in the kitchen or not, we’re concerned about their quality control.
Don’t get us wrong, the onion rings were solid, and the fries were decently crispy and fresh. Great drink selection, too! Give Simple Burger a try and tell us what you think!
